Support and Advice
Appalachian offers a slew of programs, resources, and people who are here to help you take full advantage of your education. So don't hesitate to make good use of them.
Advising - You'll be assigned an academic advisor during your Orientation session. Your advisor will help you choose, schedule and register for your courses; navigate through Appalachian's requirements, policies, and procedures; and point you university resources if you are running into just about any kind of problem.
Support for students with disabilities - If you have a disability, Appalachian's Office of Disability Services is here to help you. But we need to have the proper paperwork if you plan to ask for assistance (extended testing time, wheelchair accessibility, handicapped parking permit, reader, ASL interpreter, etc.). We ask that you complete the Disability Disclosure Form.
Help with your writing - Get advice and feedback on your prose (or fiction) at the Writing Center, which has consultants who work with you one-on-one at any stage in the writing process. Best of all, it's free.
Academic Support - Appalachian's Learning Skills Services offers free one-on-one assistance and courses each semester that you can take to bolster your reading and study skills. If you are having a tough time in a course, Tutoring Services offers free small-group sessions.
Student Support Services - If you are a first generation and/or modest-income student, you can find help and resources through Student Support Services, which offers scholarship opportunities (if you qualify for the Pell Grant), long term academic advising, technology training, mentors, help with course selection, financial aid guidance, and career planning.
Support for international students - If you are an international student, you'll find support at Appalachian's International Programs, which offers guidance on visas, financial information and more.
Career advice - Scratching your head about what kind of career you might pursue? You'll find resources and experts at the Career Development Center. You can meet with a career counselor, sift through reference materials, talk to alumni, and more.
