First Year Experience
Your first year at Appalachian will be great, no question about
it. Our award winning programs will help you settle in, meet new
friends, and get connected with campus and academic life. Getting
excited? You should be, there is plenty to be excited about. In your first year at Appalachian State University, you will be
expected to think for yourself, speak your mind and grapple with
complex problems. It won't be easy, but you will find an abundance
of resources at Appalachian to assist you in becoming academically
successful.
Academic Learning Communities
Learning Communities make it easier for students to form study groups and integrate course material while making friends, exploring majors, and discovering potential career choices. Some communities are designed so that students live together in the same residence hall and take classes with one another. Other learning communities enroll small groups of students in two or three classes that are coordinated around a specific theme, academic major or discipline. Learning Communities are being reorganized for the Fall of 2008. More information about the fall program will be available soon.
Residential Learning Communities
Students entering Appalachian in the summer or fall terms can choose specific themes which interest them and live in designated Residence Halls with students who share the same interests. Students that choose to live in these Residential Learning Communities often build friendships easier, become part of the university community quicker, earn higher grades, stay in college longer, and express greater satisfaction with college.
