French, German, and Spanish Placement Tests

The French, German, and Spanish placement tests are online tests. Each exam contains questions on grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The on-line test takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Depending on your score, you may also be asked to do a writing sample (which takes an additional 20-30 minutes). We expect you to do your own work on this exam.

You need the exam if...

  • you wish to start a beginning-level language class at Appalachian. Even if you haven't taken this language in high school, you must establish a placement score to complete registration.
  • or you took a language in school if you're considering taking this language at Appalachian.

Take the Test

  • First, you need:
    • the password, it is apps1 (all lower case, no spaces, the last digit is the number 1)
    • your official Appalachian email address. If you enter an email addres other than this one, your scores may not be recorded. This email address is sent to you in the mail about 2 weeks after you receive your admission decision letter.
  • Remember to record your score - record your placement level (if you place into 1010, 1020 or 1040) or the date that you completed the writing sample (for potential placement higher).
  • Now, start the test: http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=appstate.

Placement Tests in Other Languages

The test can also be scheduled during the school year with the Office of Testing Services by calling 262-6801 and making an appointment.

Russian, Chinese and Japanese Placement Tests

Arrangements can also be made for individual assessment in Russian, Chinese and Japanese. These arrangements often need to wait until students and faculty are back on camus in August. Please contact Dr. Alexandra Hellenbrand, Chair of the Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures at hellenbranda@appstate.edu to make an appointment for an assessment at the begining of either fall or spring semester.

Placement Credit

You can receive up to six credits for courses you surpass via the placement exam. To earn this credit, you must take and pass (with a "C" or better) the course into which you place. For clarification on foreign language placement policies, please contact registrar@appstate.edu.
