About the Math Placement Test

Who should take a Math Placement Test?

You have to take a math placement test if any of the following statements are true for you:

  1. You intend to major in computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, or science.
  2. You scored less than 520 on your SAT Math test (or less than 22 on your ACT Math test) and did not transfer math or AP math credit hours.

If you answered no to both of these items, you do not have to take a math placement test.

Which test should I take?

Mathematics Placement Test - Take this test if you have scored less than 520 on your SAT Math test (or less than 22 on your ACT Math test), unless you have transfer math or AP math credit hours. The test has 25 multiple choice questions for which you have 30 minutes to complete. Calculators may be used, see note below.

Calculus Readiness Test - Take this test if you are planning to major in computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, or science. You do not have to take this test if you have Calculus I (MAT 1110) credit either through AP or college credit. The test has 30 multiple choice questions for which you have 30 minutes to complete.

About the Tests

These computer based tests will help us place you in the best class for your major with respect to your mathematics background. Based on your performance on the test, an academic advisor will identify the course(s) that fulfill your major requirements and maximize your potential for success.

Calculator Use

You may use a calculator, but not one having a "computer algebra system" such as a TI-89 or 92. Work quickly, but carefully and do not guess answers. Guessing can inflate your score and lead to an inappropriate placement. For clarification on math placement policies, you may contact the Dept of Mathematical Sciences at 828.262.3050
