Become a Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader (SOUL)

SOULs 2007About New Student Orientation

Due to inclement weather, the application deadline has been extended to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2008.

New Student Orientation welcomes and introduces all entering students and their families to Appalachian State University. The two day freshman program and one day transfer program include presentations on campus resources, discussions with student, faculty and staff leaders and intensive academic planning. New Student Orientation is held during the month of June and a make-up session is offered before classes start in August.

Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader ( SOUL) Job Duties

  • Welcomes new students and parents to the University
  • Guide new students through orientation activities
  • Acquaints new freshmen and transfer students with the University
  • Promotes interaction among new students during small group discussions, icebreakers, meals and evening activities
  • Serves as a member of a team composed of APPALACHIAN staff, faculty, and students
  • Help to ensure new students receive the information necessary for becoming successful members of the University community
  • Specific duties include: supervising testing, leading group discussions, guiding tours, performing in a skit, serving as a resident assistant, and assisting an academic advisor
Other Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Outside employment during Orientation is not permitted because of the varied and extensive hours required. If you feel you need additional income, you should not apply for this position. Enrolling in classes during first session of summer school is also not allowed, but taking classes during second session of summer school is allowed.
  • Leaders must attend all training and Orientation events.
  • Working hours include evening duties and SOULs are required to stay in the Residence Halls while students are present for Orientation.
  • Leaders must maintain high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism regarding new students, parents, and fellow SOULs.
  • Leaders will be held to the Code of Student Conduct throughout Orientation and training.

SOUL Compensation

  • $1350.00 paid as follows: $200 on May 31, $850.00 on June 30, $150.00 on August 31 and, $150 on January 31, 2009
  • A single room

Minimum Requirements

  • Exhibit leadership potential and experience.
  • Be in good academic standing, maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
  • Be enrolled as a full time undergraduate student.
  • Be in good judicial standing with the University.

Required Training Sessions

SOULs will be required to attend all training sessions in the spring semester and prior to Orientation.  Training Session Dates (unless otherwise noted, all times are 5:30-7:30pm):

  • Wednesday evenings starting February 27th through April 23rd (excluding 3/12 and 3/26)
  • Sunday, March 30th (12 – 7pm)
  • Skit practice dates TBD
  • Wednesday, May. 21 (9:00 am – 12:00 pm) Check into Residence Halls
  • Thursday, May 22 (9:00 am - 5:30 pm)
  • Friday, May 23 (9:00 am - 5:30 pm)
  • Sunday, May 25 (4:00 – 6:00 pm)
  • Tuesday, May 27 (9:00 am - 5:30 pm)
  • Wednesday, May 28 (9:00 am - 5:30 pm)

Orientation Dates

  • Transfer Orientation and Summer School Session 1 Orientation = Monday, May 26th
  • 2nd session for Transfers – Friday, June 13
  • 9 Freshmen two-day sessions starting on May 29 and running through July 1
  • Late Sessions – August 20-22
  • Spring Orientation – January 5-9

The Selection Process

To be considered for the position you must complete the following:

  • Download the 2008 Orientation Leader Application Form (PDF).
  • Return completed application to ROOM 101 DD Dougherty by 5:00pm on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2008.
  • Submit at least two recommendationsby Friday, Feb.1 at 5pm.
  • Include unofficial transcript with application.

Once all applications are received, selected applicants will be notified and interviews will be held during February. Students not selected to interview will receive written notification. After all interviews are completed, a team of 22 SOULs will be selected and notified before the end of February. Students not selected will receive written notification.
