Athletics and Recreation

Appalachian MountaineersAppalachian has sports and recreation opportunities for every interest and ability level, so you can get competitive or just do something to burn off a few calories. It's up to you.

Varsity Sports - Once you get that Mountaineer spirit, you'll never root for another team the same way again. Appalachian's 10 men's and 10 women's sports are NCAA Division I and compete in the Southern Conference.

Club Sports - Club sports are great if you want something more competitive than intramurals and less time-consuming than varsity. The teams complete againast other colleges and universities on a non-varsity level.

Intramural Sports - With 45 teams on three levels of competition, from introductory to advanced, intramurlas are big at Appalachian. You can create your own team or join as a free agent.

Staying Fit - If you prefer to keep your workouts more informal, there are classes and plenty of fitness equipment. Appalachian also offers workshops in weight training and karate. Work out on uour own in the weight room, go for a run, play racquetball, swim, or climb.

Athletic Facilities - The Student Recreation Center includes a 50-foot climbing wall, cardio theater, weight room area, running track, pool, gyms, and a juice bar. The Quinn Recreational Center has basketball and racquetball courts and an aerobics floor--and lots of fitness equipment. The Mount Mitchell Life Fitness Center offers a combination of cardiovascular and weight training, plus space for aerobics classes.
