Campus Safety Tips
- If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly and don't put yourself in a position to become a victim of a crime because of poor judgment due to alcohol consumption.
- Always lock your residence hall room or apartment, regardless of where you go or how long you are going to be away and especially when you are asleep in the room.
- When out at night walk or jog with a friend and always be aware of your surroundings.
- Call 262-RIDE (Mountaineer Escort) for a ride during hours of darkness.
- Report suspicious persons to the University Police by calling 262-2150 or by using one of the over 60 Blue Light Emergency phones on campus.
- Always let someone know where you are going, who you are going with and what time to expect you back.
- Put your valuables in a locked locker when exercising.
- Never leave your car unlocked and always lock valuables in your trunk.
- When going out to a party, use the buddy system. Go to the party with a friend and leave the party with your friend.
- Follow your instincts. If you are walking and you feel something is wrong or someone maybe following you, go directly to a well traveled and well lit area and head for a campus emergency phone or your residence hall.
- Don't do things you feel uncomfortable doing. You usually feel uncomfortable for a reason.
- Know your dates. Meet for lunch on first dates. Always carry money or a cell phone to call a friend when you go out.
