Admission Requirements

TOEFL, ACT, and SAT Tests

The TOEFL is required of all international applicants whose recognized language of instruction is not English. Appalachian requires a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (paper based version) or 173 (computer based version) for admission. For further information concerning the TOEFL, contact: TOEFL, Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 USA.

If English is the student’s recognized language of instruction, they may complete and submit the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) instead of the TOEFL. Students who wish to take the examination outside of the United States should request the international edition of the SAT Bulletin from The College Board/ATP, Box 6200, Princeton, NJ 08541 USA.

Health Insurance

International students are required to have health insurance while enrolled at Appalachian. If an applicant is insured in her/his home country, s/he must provide a copy of the insurance policy for the student medical service files at Appalachian. This is not necessary with the application, but must be on file prior to a student arriving on campus to begin study.

Freshmen Requirements

Freshman students are selected on the basis of a satisfactory combination of academic performance in secondary education and SAT or TOEFL scores.

Any student who has the equivalent of a high school education in the US will be considered a freshman applicant. Each applicant must submit a complete application and, if required, the score results from any comprehensive examinations such as the GCE.

Transfer Student Requirements

Transfer students are selected on the basis of achievement in high school and college and scores on either the SAT or TOEFL exams.

A student who has completed the equivalent of a high school education and has earned credit hours from fully accredited post-secondary institutions will be considered a transfer applicant.

Transfer applicants must submit a completed application and include official transcripts (with certified English translations) from all post-secondary institutions attended since high school. In addition, an official transcript or certificate verifying successful completion of secondary school (with certified English translations) must be submitted.

If the post-secondary institution(s) the student has attended (or is currently attending) is/are located in a foreign county, the applicant should submit to the Office of Admissions a school catalog or syllabus describing course contents. Photocopies of documents are accepted, but originals or photocopies certified by a government, school, or US embassy official are preferred.

Immunization Requirements

The State of North Carolina requires all students to furnish proof of immunization against measles, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria. The Office of Admissions mails a medical form to each accepted student, and the form must be on file before the student may register for classes. All medical information submitted by the student must be translated into English and verified by the student's physician.
