For Transfer Students
Are you a transfer student or a new freshman (for admission classification purposes)?
Transfer students have graduated from high school at least one year prior to beginning a program at Appalachian State University and completed 15 or more semester hours of transferable coursework at another accredited college/university. Transfer applicants must have at least a cumulative of 2.0 on their college work (as computed by Appalachian), and those with less than 30 semester hours must also meet freshmen requirements. An applicant with fewer than 15 semester hours should apply as a freshman. Please note that transfers are reviewed on a rolling basis and are encouraged to apply six months to one year prior to their intended date of entry.
New freshmen students have graduated from high school/early college/middle college less than one year prior to beginning a program at Appalachian State University or have completed less than 15 semester hours of work at another college/university. Note: many new freshmen complete courses at a college/university prior to, or after, high school graduation. The high school/early college/middle college graduation date overrides the amount of college credit earned, for admission classification purposes.
About Transfer Admission
Transfer admission is based on successfully meeting all requirements and space availability. Transfer students are admitted based on successful completion of 30 semester hours of college transferable credits. Technical, developmental and orientation courses are usually not transferable. A cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.0 (as calculated by Appalachian) is required to be considered for admission; however due to the increased interest, transfer applicants may be subject to a more competitive academic review. (Transfer applicants with less than 30 semester hours must meet the admission requirements for freshmen.)
- Beginning in Fall 2010, a "C" or better is required for all transfer coursework in order to transfer the credit into Appalachian.
- Please remember that all attempted coursework is calculated into your GPA upon applying to Appalachian. This includes repeated coursework taken to replace a grade, as well as the original grade from the first attempt of the course.
Students less than 24 years of age who have not completed the high school Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) must earn either an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or an Associate in Fine Arts degree or complete 6 semester hours in each of the following college level areas: English, math, science, and social sciences in order to meet Minimum Course Requirements (MCR). Two units of a second language will be required of applicants who are high school graduates of 2004 and beyond before being admissible.
When to Apply
Transfer students applying for summer or fall admission are encouraged to apply 6-12 months in advance of their intended entry date. Transfer applications for spring entry are processed in early October of the preceding semester. Applications are usually processed in approximately four weeks after the completed application is received.
Transferring from a NC Community College
Students who enrolled in the North Carolina Community Colleges beginning fall 1997, and beyond, may possibly transfer to Appalachian as a junior and proceed to an upper division college upon successful completion of the requirements for an Associate in Arts, or an Associate in Science degree. Students who complete the NC Articulation Agreement and 44 hour core curriculum requirements at a North Carolina Community College will transfer as having met core requirements at Appalachian if no grade of "D" was received. Completion of the core must be indicated on the official community college transcript to be recognized by Appalachian.
For transfer students from North Carolina Community Colleges, see the Equivalency Information.
