Transfer Students - Frequently Asked Questions

I plan to apply for admission to Appalachian after another semester at my current college. What should I take before transferring to Appalachian?

You should take courses at your current college that would fulfill requirements for either a major you are considering or the “Core” at Appalachian.

How will my credits transfer to Appalachian State University?

The Admissions Office evaluates transfer credit for new students. You will receive a formal evaluation from Admissions, once you are accepted.  The Admissions Office staff does answer questions about transfer credit on an informal basis prior to admission, however.  Please feel free to contact the Admissions Office staff by phone at (828) 262-2120 or by e-mail at admissions@appstate.edu.

When will I register for classes at Appalachian?

You will register for classes at Orientation. During Orientation you will meet with faculty members in your academic interest area.  You will receive information about your intended major at this meeting. Later in the day, you will meet with an academic advisor who will help you choose and register for classes appropriate for your major, skills, and interests.

Is Orientation required?

Yes. Orientation is required. It is a one day session where you will have the opportunity to meet faculty members in your academic interest area as well as other new students. You will also meet with an academic advisor who will help you interpret your transcript evaluation and assist you in registration for the upcoming semester.  Complete information about Orientation is available on-line at www.orientation.appstate.edu.

Where can I find information on degree requirements at Appalachian?

Will I be able to get the classes I need if I have to wait until Orientation to register?

Yes. Representatives of each Dean’s Office are available in a central location during Orientation, for the specific purpose of assisting new transfer students with admission into closed classes and/or classes requiring special permission.

Do I have to take a placement test for Math?

You need to take the Math Placement Test if you have scored less than 520 on your SAT Math test or less than 22 on your ACT Math test. The only exceptions are if you have transfer math credit or AP math credit.
You need to take the Calculus Readiness Test if you are planning to major in computer science, mathematics, or science. The only exception is if you have credit for Calculus I (MAT 1110), either through AP or transfer work.
Complete information about the Math Placement Test and Calculus Readiness Test, as well as access to both tests, is available on-line at www.mathplacement.appstate.edu.
